HEAL Paddle Event Raises Thousands for Autism
Great Ponte Vedra Paddle Benefiting HEAL Brings Hundreds to Mickler's Landing
For the third year in a row The Great Ponte Vedra Paddle Benefiting HEAL, Presented by One Call Care Management was a great success. On Labor Day, over 500 people gathered at Micklers Landing in Ponte Vedra for the stand up paddleboard (SUP) races and for a day of family fun. The Autism community was the true winner in this charity event, which raised upwards of $30,000. Proceeds from the paddle event are earmarked for specialized programs, camps and to HEAL's latest initiative – iHEAL, iPads Helping Enrich Autistic Lives. iHEAL's goal is to provide an iPads in every ESE classrooms across six school districts.
Under the direction of Dana Current, event founder and HEAL board member, along with twenty local businessmen known as "The Founding Members," the charity paddle has received rave reviews from the participants and sponsors. The stand up paddleboard event is the largest of its kind on Florida's East Coast, attracting hundreds of paddlers who competed in 1, 3 and 5 mile races and the "Anything that Floats Challenge," a flotilla of teams in themed costumes. Those competing ranged in age and skill, from the Elite 5 milers racers, SUP enthusiasts, to those who dressed up in themed costumes competing in the fun flotilla race.
Trophies were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for men and women in each division. Those who chose not to compete in the events, enjoyed watching the races, music, food and fun. Two SUP Boards, wet suits, skate boards and a Go Pro were among many items raffled raffled off. Over 25 sponsors and vendors tents were set up to demo paddleboards and to show the latest and greatest in the SUP industry.
Next year's Great Ponte Vedra Paddle is slated for Labor Day, September 7, 2015, at Mickler's Landing. See you there!
