The Really, Really, Really Late Show! Join HEAL for the World Premiere!

Come join HEAL for the World Premiere of the Really, Really, Really Late Show.  This film was created from the 2009 HEAL film camp, and directed by Joey Travolta.

The movie, which was filmed, directed, edited, written and acted by HEAL campers will premiere in late October or November – Stay Tuned for details.  The event is open to the public, and tickets are $5 per person.

HEAL would like to thank our partners on this project: MDI Holdings, for sponsoring the Film Camp, University of North Florida for hosting the camp, Karen Sadler of Filmlab Productions for producing an amazing experience, and Joey Travolta and his team for making this movie.  One camper wrote to Joey Travolta, “I loved your camp so much that I changed my elective next year to theater performance.  Film Camp allowed me to see a side of myself that I never knew existed.  I loved every minute of it and I thank you for giving me the chance to experience it.  I will always be grateful to you.”

Stay tuned for details on the Premiere of the Really, Really, Really Late Show!

Legislative Update:  Florida Autism Task Force

By Amy Collins, Mom to Amanda (9) and Sarah (7)

Governor Crist’s Autism Task Force has been working diligently to develop ways to improve the quality of life for those suffering with autism and related disorders in Florida. These Task Force meetings occur about 4 times per year. Meetings are usually held in Tallahassee and are open to the public.  For more information, go to:  http://www.doh.state.fl.us/AlternateSites/HealthyFloridians/autismCommittees.html

In March 2009, the Task Force submitted its report to the Governor.  Some of the recommendations and goals in this report include:

  • Development of a statewide “Autism Website”
  • Research initiatives to improve vaccine safety
  • More detailed informed parental consent for vaccines
  • Prohibition of medical/pharmaceutical interventions from Florida CARD centers

To view the full report, go to:  http://www.healthyfloridians.com/documents/FinalReport-2009_04.pdf   A big thank you to the Task Force members for all their hard work.  Moving forward, we will need everyone’s support as upcoming legislation emerges, consistent with some of these goals.

HEAL Accepting Fall Grant Applications – Deadline is October 9th

HEAL is proud to have awarded over $550,000 to area organizations to fund therapists, teachers, schools, support groups, camps, museums, and educational facilities.  Because of our successful First Coast Zoo Walk for Autism the proceeds raised from the walk will be invested back into our local Autism community!

If you have a great idea for a project, program, class or extracurricular activity that would benefit individuals with Autism, apply for a HEAL grant for funding.   Thanks to the support of our generous community, The HEAL Foundation, has funded and partnered in several new programs throughout the  First Coast  Area– Riding the Wave Surf Camp, Healing Autism Through Bowling, HUG- Golf Clinic, HEALing Arts and HEALing Families are just a few projects  that HEAL has sponsored from inception.  Hundreds of kids in the Jacksonville   Area have benefited from these programs.  Your ideas to help others could be set into motion  next!  The deadline for the Fall Grants to be submitted is October 9th.

North Star Autism Support – Special Counseling for Parents and Families

By Lisa Amato

North Star Autism Support is now offering supportive counseling for parents as well as consultation services to guide treatment planning.  Navigating autism is not for the faint of heart:  it demands strength, commitment, patience, perseverance, and most of all - steadfast love.  We all get lost at times, frustrated with regressions, confused about treatment options, angry with our spouse, worried about money, and perhaps demanding too much of our neurotypical children.  This fog can leave a family, and a child, adrift.  North Star was established to provide a beacon - a sense hope and direction for families in need.  As a licensed psychologist and mother of an autistic child, I have discovered that resilience in the face of adversity leads to better health outcomes.  Equipped with the education and training to meet this challenge in my own family, I am dedicated to helping other parents in our autism community.  The mission of North Star is to provide direction and promote resilience for autism families, improving all of our children’s outcomes.
