HEAL Monthly Meetings Monday, October 11

By Linda Carzoli

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for HEAL TOGETHER! HEAL’s new Monthly Meetings begin on Monday October 11th, at 6:30. HEAL TOGETHER! is a great opportunity for our local community to connect with parents, teachers, professionals and caregivers impacted by Autism. There is no cost for these meetings and we will have a variety of speakers and topics throughout the year. Click here to email me ideas and suggestions for upcoming meetings.

The first HEAL TOGETHER! will feature Jill Fane, mother of a child with Autism and Parent Trainer, at Central Florida Parent Center. Jill will give a presentation titled; “It’s Those Wonderful Rights: Protecting the Rights of Children and Parents”. This information will benefit students, parents and those who work in the school system.

Speaker Jill Fane of Central Florida Parent Center

HEAL TOGETHER! meetings will be fun too. One of our goals is to laugh at each meeting. You will be able to connect with other parents and caregivers, make new friends, and have a chance to laugh and learn. Don’t miss our first meeting October 11. We will be giving away tickets to a Jaguar game!

As a single parent raising a child with Autism, it is both important and comforting for me to connect with other parents in our community. I invite and encourage all parents, teachers, professionals and caregivers to attend HEAL TOGETHER!

See you on Monday, October 11th, 6:30 pm at Christ’s Church, 6045 Greenland Road, Jacksonville, located off of 9A and US 1. Click here for a map and directions.

HEAL Film Camp Mom’s Say thank you to Richard Willich

By Carrie Hunter

September 10th was a special night for a lot of HEAL Moms, courtesy of Mr. Richard Willich of MDI Holdings, who donated $80,000 towards each of the last two years for MDI presents HEAL Film Camp produced by Karen Sadler of FilmLab. He invited this year’s Film Camp Moms out to MDI to enjoy some Mom time. Mr. Willich made a point to introduce himself to all the Moms and make us feel special. Joey Travolta, director of The HEAL Film Camp, showed a preview of our kid’s film from this summer. It was fabulous and there was not a dry eye in the room.

I decided to do something very special for Mr. Willich and Joey. Bringing the Film Camp here to Florida has brought magic to all of us and we appreciate what they do. I collected pictures from other Moms, and put together two photo books with 68 pages of our kids at camp this year. As the Moms were coming to MDI, we secretly had them sign the books. I presented the books to the both of them and it was a very touching moment for everyone.

As pictures were taken and toasts were made, Mr. Willich asked all of us if we wanted Joey back next year? With hands held high we all said YES! We cannot thank Richard Willich and MDI enough for agreeing to support the HEAL 2011 Film Camp. It was truly a night we will forever cherish.

Join us for the HEAL 2010 Film Premiere at University of North Florida, at the Student Union Auditorium on Saturday, November 6 at 1:00 pm. The event is open to the public and tickets are $5 per person, campers attend free.

Growing Up with an Autistic Sibling

Taken from article by Dana Fialco, Century City News

Being the parent to a child on with Autism Spectrum is challenging, and so is being a sibling. While much attention is paid to parents and the child, often the sibling needs focus too. Children with Autistic siblings can gain a lot from their experience including:

  1. Perception. Siblings can become real thinkers who see beyond the face value, as well as diplomats who can navigate and reconcile conflicting points of view.
  2. Perspective. Siblings can grow into adults who can balance their feelings with not overacting to trivialities or falling prey to self-pity. This allows them to stay calm during difficult situations, and to be thoughtful rather then reactionary.
  3. Leadership. Siblings assisting their parents grow into leaders who are comfortable navigating uncertainty and still delivering results; they become comfortable leading and motivating others, and they learn to see and foster the potential in those they lead.
  4. Courage. For siblings, venturing into society with someone who doesn’t conform can be an embarassment. However, it helps them see public perception and brings them the strength and compassion to face the world head on.
  5. Creativity. The communication skills needed to interact with a sibling with Autism are unique and varied. Simply being engaged with a person lacking the tools to temper individuality through conformity stretches the mind and creativity of a sibling.

Looking for ways to help your nuerotypical child reach their full potential? CARD of Jacksonville is planning a SibShop. A Sibshop is “an opportunity for brothers and sisters of children with Autism to obtain peer support and education within a recreational context. The Sibshop model intersperses information and activities while focusing on fun! “ To learn more or register, contact Elise Bowers at 633-0768, or elise.bowers@jax.ufl.edu.
